What is Flow State Fitness?

Short answer:

It is my attempt to help as many people as possible maximize the efforts they put into their health and fitness. Through this I hope to help make it understood how multifaceted all the components of health are, and how optimal health can lead to a state of optimal performance across all areas of your life. 

I have around 40 or so clients so first and foremost I want to offer them a resource that contains some of the information I'm always throwing at them a mile a minute. An online version of me to help keep you accountable, motivated, and informed.

Long answer:

I think most people can come up with some kind of definition for fitness. So taking that part out lets first just ask, "What is flow state?"

It is defined by the infallible Wikipedia as: "the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity." Most athletes have felt it before and know it as "the zone." Maybe you've been lost in a hobby or felt it while finishing a big project at school or work. You suddenly realize you haven't eaten all day and the sun is about to set. For me, being in a flow state is characterized by having a laser like focus on the task at hand and everything else falling wayside. You are solely centered in your action within the moment, which falls instinctively in rhythm with the next and the previous . Nothing is forced, it "flows"  Its almost as if your body and mind are performing unconsciously to accomplish the task at hand.  You are in a state of optimal performance. You lose your sense of "self" during this process and have no fear of failure or expectations of what comes next. 

I believe that being in a flow state as much time as possible is the key to success in fitness, business, relationships, health and in fact the key to true happiness. This is something that eastern philosophy and religion has long been saying. Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism all place great emphasis on a very similar state of "oneness" with the moment and all that surrounds us within it.

During flow state  there is a greatly increased capacity for learning or advancing your skill set. Flow tends to lead to more flow, and faster advancement. This is a large part of my training theory. I believe the more time you spend in the flow state when it comes to your training the faster you progress and strengthen the connection between your body and mind. This is the key to taking your body to the next level, and to maximizing your overall health.

In my opinion optimal health is a key component to living every day life through a similar flow-like state. Where you are engaged fully in the moment, making the best decisions instinctively, and not bogged down by fears or insecurities. Where you feel life's vibrant force flowing through you.

In my life when I obtain this "life flow" I have certain components that are in place and can be seen as pillars. I need these to be solid, and  to be challenging/ stimulating without causing me anxiety. Anxiety prevents flow, but is often times a step on the way to it. I need to be able to experience flow in all 3 of these areas to obtain my desired state of mind.

  2. Work 
  3. Relationships 

Health will consist of your physical health as well as your mental. Mobility is the most important aspect of physical health in my opinion. Hormonal balance and low inflammation are keys for mental. Work doesn't necessarily have to be a job, it can be volunteering, raising a family or even a hobby you get great sense of accomplishment from. Basically work to me means feeling like you are contributing to the world somehow. Relationships obviously will be made up of family and the people surrounding you. Human relationships are absolutely vital and help us cultivate ourselves.

I don't know how much I will be able to help you with numbers 2 & 3 but i feel as though I have a lot to offer to help you obtain your maximum level of health. Specifically the fitness sub component of physical health.
